Meet The Cornfed Giants!

The story of the Cornfed Giants is both a triumph and a tragedy.  The Cornfed Giants were started in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the 1990’s as Randy and The Reamers.  Randy Hudson was on vocals and Kurt Jasa was the primary songwriter and guitarist.  Unfortunately,  for both, this band sucked more ass than a world champion rusty trombone soloist. The songs were flat, the recordings stunk and no record company would touch the fledgling act. The only gig performed was at the former Big Dawgs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the late 1990’s one Tuesday night at open mic. The drummer didn’t show up. The first two minutes of Sultans of Swing was played to a crowd of three or four workers drinking on the clock. It was a humiliating beat down no band can recover from.

The Cornfed Giants were formed after the dissolution of Randy and The Reamers. The band members were all Cedar Rapids musicians. The band featured Chuck Smith on vocals, Jasa on guitar, Levi Karpa on bass and the late Matt Manuel on guitar. The band had no drummer and made only a few recordings. The band never played live. None of the recordings survived. There is video footage in Las Vegas and in Cedar Rapids for a music video that was never produced. It is classic footage but, surely, it would have sucked ass too. The band dissolved.

As the years went by the talent, the songs and the recordings improved. All the members gave up long ago, however. Why join a band with a guy who can’t sing, has minimal talent and knows no one in the business? What no one saw coming was artificial intelligence’s entrance into the music scene. The basics of the songs are still written by Jasa; the chords, the words and a few guitar licks. The rest is the computer on vocals, drums, lead guitar and bass. These two rock and roll guys on either side of me in the picture above I saw in the airport a few years back. They were in a band called Wicked. Nice enough to pose for the rock and roll selfie.
